New Years Eve In

New Years Eve In

As much as I'd love to be out partying and doing things I probably shouldn't be to ring in the new year, this year I am taking it easy. So I decided leggings and and my new oversized gray sweater from Carson's with a hint of color in one of my many scarves will do just fine (I'll post a picture of me in it later).

Every year my family and I go to church it's usually about two hours and I love it, it's kind of hard for a Pastor to mess up a New Years Eve sermon, but it's mostly dancing and singing and skits and stuff. It's a "holy ghost" party haha. Even though I know for a fact more than half the congregation goes out after that and gets wasted. But that's besides the point, the point is, it's generally a good time.

Usually I'd meet up with friends and we'd go to someones house and party, but not this year. I got a few offers (less than usual) but in the end I decided sitting and watching the ball drop with my family and best friend will be enough.

Besides, I have to rest up for my best friend Joel's birthday week when I get back to school, it's gonna be crazy ;)

Anyway, no matter what you are doing tonight and who you are doing it with I hope you are safe and have a wonderful time. Happy New Year! (:

I've Got a Sick Obsession

Honestly, I do: BLOGGING!

I have created yet another blog and honestly I was inspired to do so from the comments left by you guys and the blog posts I read promoting this blog.

I have created a weight loss blog to document all the struggles and triumphs I will endure as I begin my weight loss journey. While it is a blog that I am already so proud of, I am also so nervous for how it will turn out.

I have never been so vulnerable in a blog before (and I share some pretty personal stuff on my personal Tumblr blog) but there is something about weight that makes me feel so scared.

I'm not going to bother going into too much detail about it on here though, if you're interested in what I'm up to, or if you want to offer up some advice (which I would greatly appreciate!) check it out:

P.S. If any of you would like to point me in the direction of some weight loss/support blogs I'd appreciate that as well!

Are You Guilty?

I am and I regret nothing!

Hit the Gym!

Hit the Gym!

Hit the Gym! by wanna-be-fashionista featuring a blue t shirt

Who says the gym is just for oversized muscle shirts and basketball shorts? If I'm going to get down and dirty (or at least sweaty) at the gym, I might as well look kinda cute right? I will be spending more time than ever at the gym this year, so I figured might as well stock up on yoga pants, like the ones above from Old Navy (I prefer theirs, they are cheaper and form fitting but not too much like their counterparts over at VS), cute Mizzou tees (my school!) and a good pair of running shoes (I am still trying to figure out what that is). Of course you can't forget a gym bag and water bottle to stay hydrated!

Whether your New Years goal is to hit the gym more, or hit the runway, do it in style!

Happy New YOU!

Well it's that time of year again, time to come up with your best list of what you will accomplish in the next year, only for those goals to fade three weeks in to 2012.

Why is that? Why is it that we can't even keep promises to ourselves for a full year?

My mom always says "Speak things as though they are" she's always told my siblings and I to speak things into existence, if I want to end up in New York City one day with my own fashion magazine, then I should speak it now. Instead of saying "If I ever make it to New York" she tells us to say "When I make it to New York"

It really helps build confidence within yourself.

Something else my mother always does is write down her goals for the new year, and she calls them goals not resolutions because the word resolution has such a negative stigma now-a-days. So this year I decided to try it, I'm going to tack it onto my bulletin board in my dorm room and read them every day and as I accomplish each one I am going to check it off.

But it is so much more than just writing them down and looking at them every once in a while, you have to believe in them, believe in yourself. If you're religious, pray about them and even if you aren't meditate on them, think about what each one means to you and how you can get each goal done. Every move you make should be a positive one, putting yourself one step closer to your goal, and if it isn't, it should at least be a learning experience in which you can grow from.

So here's my list:

  • Shoot for a 4.0 semester! You can do it!
  • Get healthy/lose weight (and love myself through out the entire process)
  • Find a kick ass place to live next year with amazing roommates
  • Love myself <3
  • Be happy (:
  • Find a job in CoMo that I ADORE!
  • Truly cherish every relationship I have
Now you know mine, what's yours? Join me, write down your goals for 2012, go into the year with a positive outlook on life, yes January 1st is just another day, but it could be the day that your life changes for the better. Don't take it for granted!

Happy New Year!

I had a friend in junior high that obsessed over J. Crew and because I looked up to her, I did too. It is a fabulous store, with fabulous clothes no doubt, but the prep look never really looked good on me. Actually, I never really knew if what I was picking was even preppy enough.

It's been a few years since then, but here is my stab at again. It is definitely making a comeback I'd say and here's how I'd do it, if I were to wear it.

Cozy Cardi

Cozy Cardi

I haven't been the most fashionable girl ever during winter break, but when I do go out this is what I've been in, I usually add a cute scarf for flare, but you get the idea. Cardigans and scarves are just the best accessories ever, you can create new outfits instantly with a new scarf. I'll work on some purchasing some new pieces for this winter season, but for now I'll stick to this. Besides, let's be honest, there isn't anyone walking in the streets of Fishers looking any better ;)

Tipping the Scales

So it is no secret that in the fashion world, looks tend to matter. I've known this from day one, but still people feel the need to remind me of it.

I'm not sure if any of you have heard, but there is a new MTV show called Chelsea Settles. MTV cameras follow around a young woman named Chelsea who is obese and trying to make it as a fashion stylist in LA. However no one takes her too seriously because of her weight. Now I don't watch this show religiously or anything, but catching it from time to time made me realize that I need to make some changes: my weight.

Growing up, I never liked the way I looked, at all. I hated my hair (natural), my skin color and especially my weight. I've done a lot of growing up since then and I have come to love myself, but I still know I need a lot of work, there is always room for improvement.

I've been talking about getting healthier ever since I entered high school and it has been a crazy roller coaster ride ever since. It was a lot easier the first few years because I played volleyball for the school and we trained year round, therefore, I had someone forcing me to watch what I ate and work out, and even though I wasn't the smallest girl on the team (I was actually probably the biggest) I was okay with that weight, at least I would be now.

I'm through playing games though, I have nothing better to do over break, but drive myself to the gym so I might as well start a routine and continue it when I get back to school. This weight is coming off and this time, it's for good.

I'll post updates and what not, mainly ones that have to do with the cute new clothes I'll be able to fit into and things like that, wish me luck!

Going Natural

So this might not apply to anyone that reads this blog, but hopefully it helps someone out there.

I am African American (obvi) and for years we have been flocking to beauty shops, sitting under dryers, paying out the wazoo to get our hair to be bone straight, super long and just down right luxurious because that is what society has told us was beautiful. I am guilty of it too, I remember the summer before my third grade year I begged my mom for a relaxer and she finally gave in.

I remember the day I got it done too, it burned like hell (I'm still not sure why they burn) and I cried, I just wanted it to be over. I had been in that shop for hours, but the finished product was worth it. I couldn't stop playing with my hair and I couldn't stop looking in the mirror. It was so long! My mom had created a monster.

I began getting relaxers regularly and I loved it, I went to a predominately white grade school, middle school and high school and it was honestly so refreshing to look like my white counterparts. It made me feel worthy.

But then I got a job and my mother made me start paying for my own hair and one day when I was sitting under the dryer listening to my beautician complain about why black hair doesn't grow it hit me. I don't have to do this, I don't have to sit here every two weeks and shell out money for hair that is damaged and not at all what I want it to be.

So I went home and immediately started looking up natural hair blogs, I was skeptical at first because I wasn't sure what my family and friends would say, I didn't think they'd understand. At this time I was really learning to love myself for me and how God made me, so I thought why not go back to my roots, my kinky, curly roots.

And that is exactly what I did. May 5 I got my last relaxer. I got braids over the summer so I wouldn't have to deal with my hair at all and then I got all the damage cut off and got it cut into a bob for college.

A week into college and I had to wash it, this wasn't something new to me. What scared me was what I was going to do with it once it was dry. I let friends take care of it for a little while and then I tried my first twist-out and it was...not good.

But I've gotten better and I'm learning to work with the two textures in my hair (the un-relxaed new growth and the relaxed ends). I think in about a year or so I'll do my "big chop" (cut off all my relaxed/processed ends so that only new growth is left) we'll see how long it is. I love it so far and it is so much more versatile.

So why post this story on my fashion blog? Well because going natural is a trend if you will, in the black community. A model choosing to go natural affects who will book her, if she fits a certain look and ultimately if she will get hired for more than just "ethnic" shoots.

All hair is beautiful and what you do with your hair should ultimately be what YOU want, not what others think or like and that's what I had to realize. If you have any questions or want advice about going natural I am always here, just shoot me an email (:

Below are pictures of the three different styles I've been rocking while transitioning to natural hair (the last one features my newest obsession, headbands-expect a post about it!).

Not Much of a Reader?

I started this blog for longer more in depth posts on my thoughts on fashion, the current trends and my experiences, but I know everyone isn't into that. If you are one of those people feel free to check out my tumblr fashion blog titles Fashions Fade, Style is Eternal.

Here you'll still see what inspires me, what styles I like, minus the long posts and hey maybe you'll like the world of Tumblr and join, it's a lot of fun!

So, what are you waiting for, check it out:

Felling Scarfy?

Ever wanted to wear a new scarf, but you weren't sure how to tie it? Well today as I was coming the internet for the latest headlines (okay, I was on Tumblr) I came across a site that has over 30 different video tutorials on how to tie scarves.

Check it out:

It's amazing how much different your outfit will look when you tie your scarf differently. I tried the simple Loose Wrap today!

What I Wore: Lunch with the Girls

Today I went to Johnny Rockets with two of my girl friends from grade school, we've grown up together and I love those girls so much, here's what I wore.

Teal Cardigan- Forever 21 Plus $16
Cream Scoop-neck- Old Navy $20
Scarf- Avenue $10
Leggings- Target $6
Peacoat- Maurice $75
*Knitted Gray UGGS- $160

*Not Pictured

New segment, please bear with me!

So I said that I wasn't going to do this until I got my new camera, but after checking my bank account, I realized that will take longer than I wanted, so I will just make do for now with my point and shoot and my Macs camera.

Anyway, at least once a week I want to do a "What I Wore" post showcasing an outfit that I (or one of my friends) wore that week. I plan on taking a picture(s) of myself (or whomever) in the actual clothes so you can get the full affect.

NOTE: Niether I nor my friends are models, we're teenagers who occasionally dress well and I want to showcase the outfit not the person wearing the outfit.

For the first week I am doing what I wore out to lunch with two of my old friends today. It wasn't anything fancy, in fact you'll find that what I wore is generally "my style" and if I say I am dressing up, it is usually what I end up in, but I'm working on trying new pieces and stepping out of my comfort zone.

I tried to look as cute as one can look when she's running late for a lunch date with her friends and using her MacBook webcam as her camera, so bear with me because the photos aren't the greatest, but you'll get the idea and I'll get better with each passing week.
This is so me, I hate getting all dressed up in a cute outfit and not even leaving the house. However, today I have a very cute outfit planned for lunch with two of my old friends, I'll post it later on!

The Style Inquisitor

For those of you on Twitter, you know how sometimes you'll tweet something about you'll get some random spamming twitter bot to tweet at you some irrelevant thing? Well, that happened to me the other day.

I tweeted about how I liked Italian Vogue better than American Vogue (tis true) and I got a response from some chick telling me to check out this great fashion blog. I'm on break, with nothing better to do, so I decided to take her up on her offer, I loved it. This guy is great and really knows his stuff.

However, I should probably warn you that it is predominately male fashion, but that's what I am really interested in at the moment, so it is now a favorite on my bookmarks bar. Still, some of the tips he gives are great for girls and guy to know.

So if you're looking for a new fashion blog to fawn over (besides mine :P) or if you're just bored, check this kid out. His name is Ricardo.

Enjoy! (:
